Do you prescribe medications?

No. If you would benefit from medication, your therapist can provide you with a referral to a prescribing physician of your choice. Many individuals find relief through counseling alone and may not need medication.

How does confidentiality work with counseling?

In general, the privacy of all communications between a patient and a therapist is protected by law, and I can only release information about our work to others with your written permission.  But there are a few exceptions.
 
In most legal proceedings, you have the right to prevent me from providing any information about your treatment.  In some legal proceedings, a judge may order my testimony if he/she determines that the issues demand it, and I must comply with that court order.  
 
There are some situations in which I am legally obligated to take action to protect others from harm, even if I have to reveal some information about a patient’s treatment.  For example, if I believe that a child [elderly person or disabled person] is being abused or has been abused, I must [may be required to] make a report to the appropriate state agency.
If I believe that a patient is threatening serious bodily harm to another, I am [may be] required to take protective actions.  These actions may include notifying the potential victim, contacting the police, or seeking hospitalization for the patient. If the patient threatens to harm himself/herself, I may be obligated to seek hospitalization for him/her or to contact family members or others who can help provide protection.  If a similar situation occurs in the course of our work together, I will attempt to fully discuss it with you before taking any action.

Do I have to be diagnosed with something to get counseling?

Accepted Answer

No. Diagnoses are only given if necessary. Counseling can benefit everyone, but doesn't necessarily mean that you have a diagnosable disorder.

What if I need to reschedule?

That's ok. We understand life happens. We ask that you give us 24 hours notice if possible. You may reschedule online through your patient portal or by calling 813-421-9940.

What happens if I don't like my therapist?

Accepted Answer

Counseling is a deeply personal process and requires a certain degree of comfort with your therapist. We understand this and respect your feelings. You can choose a different therapist, or let us know that you would like a referral elsewhere.

How do I make a complaint?

Accepted Answer

We recommend you attempt to resolve conflicts with whomever you have the issue. When that is unsuccessful, we want to help make things right. Please submit a grievance for our review.
